Project Description:
The Public Facilities Building (Toilet Block) at Waitangi was required to be a light and airy building, strongly connected with the outside landscaping and a memorable experience for the thousands of people who will use it – not just another toilet block.
A simple post and beam structure was developed to support the floating roof. Glass and concrete walls are fitted under this canopy providing the envelop to the building.
Beyond the basic structure, timber has been used to create the external screens to the glass, enclosure to the external services on the rear of the building, as inserts to the steel columns, heavy gable end fascia boards, veneer finishes to the ceiling and internal screen.
The variety of colour and textures associated with the building creates tactile and visual experiences, which would not have been possible without the natural qualities of the timber used.
