Project Description:
The “Gateway” building at Waitangi was required to reflect the cultural heritage of the place and create a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Timber and steel have been blended together to create a fusion of product representing the bi-cultural nature of the place. The steel also provides the structural “bones” of the building whilst the timber provides the (internal) “skin” – full of beauty and warmth.

From the bollards to the front of the building, the timber inserts to the steel structural frames, the veneered ceiling linings, the suspended timber “whare” linking the outside to the inside, to the finely finished laminated units – timber plays a major part in creating a building full of soft natural colours, the smell and varied textures of wood.
