Project Description:
A stand of Nikau, an idyllic private bay and a building platform defined by native-bush clad ridges either side, set the architectural program for the design of this family beach house.
Several functional nodes were positioned on the site, and it was the spaces in-between that became the inhabitable and operational spaces. Materiality played an important role in the articulation of these in-between spaces.
Sitting over and between the stone walls, a softer but equally natural material was used to enclose built forms. The tone, texture and weathering qualities of black stained cedar suited this role.
The colour of the New Zealand bush is a silvered black. Against the trunks of the Nikau grove behind, the underside of fern leaves, the charcoal stems growing from the flax plants in front and the surrounding bush; the textural qualities and colour tones of the stained cedar are common.
