Project Description:
St Josephs Home of Compassion New Residential Wing provides a homely environment for specialist dementia care. Natural materials present throughout the facility enhance residents comfort and provide a feeling of familiarity.
Timber framing is used due to its environmentally sustainable design (ESD) ideals, being sustainably harvested and locally sourced. The use of timber construction also helped to minimise construction time and cost.
Timber forms the anchor for the material finishes schedule. Cedar weatherboard cladding provides a low maintenance, pleasing aesthetic and has ESD benefits. Careful consideration is given to the detailing of these weatherboards.
The weatherboards also feature in the interior and help in providing a feeling of warmth, enhanced by clear finish plywood wall protection, and solid timber jambs, skirtings, and handrails. Carefully crafted timber bay windows feature in each of the bedrooms, with deep timber sills providing both a casual seat and a ledge for personal items.
