Project Description:
Context Architects were approached in 2007 by John and Louise Tulp who were looking to extend their existing ‘ranch’ house in rural Papakura. Context responded by extrapolating two axes of the dwelling out in northern and eastern directions into the landscape.
The timber additions enhance the existing timber weatherboards and relate to the rustic feel of the property and surrounding landscape. Timber battens are perched on top of Glu-Lam portals and feather out to the ends of the axes to provide an aspect of shading to the new timber deck while acting as directional elements. A new timber deck not only opens up the second storey but allows you to occupy the transitional space between the house and landscape.
Everyone involved appreciates the bond this dwelling holds with its grounds and the occupants tell us that they enjoy the new spaces that have been created by the transitional timber portals.
