We mentioned it last week. We’ve included another story on the “heavy truck amendment” in this week’s issue to detail just what heavier vehicles being permitted on New Zealand’s roads from 1 May is going mean to the forest products sector.
It’s big – it’s really big. Forestry is the country’s largest road transport sector user, carrying over 31 million tonnes of logs and manufactured products annually. The maximum weight and length of laden vehicles are the biggest factors in determining the economic and environmental efficiency of road transport. Any changes that impact on improved efficiencies in road transportation of course will have a huge impact on the competitiveness of the NZ forestry industry.
