December 2009 NZ forestry stats released

Key points – compared with the same quarter of the previous year (December 2008) include:

Total roundwood volume harvested this quarter was an estimated 5.5 million cubic metres, the largest December quarter harvest volume since 2002.

Total log export volume rose 24.3 percent compared with the December 2008 quarter, to 2.2 million cubic metres. China and India were the only major trading partners to increase their log import volumes from New Zealand.

Exports to China were 52.6 percent of the total export log volume.

When compared to the year ended December 2008, the total log export volume increased 31.5 percent (2.1 million cubic metres). Over this period Chinese consumption of logs increased by 2.7 million cubic metres, although this increase was partially offset by reduced exports to Korea (down 18.3 percent) and Japan (down 31.2 percent).

    For the year ended December 2009, the harvest volume increased 6.8 percent to an estimated 20.9 million cubic metres – the largest December year harvest volume since 2003.
